Really Cute People (pub. date March 12, 2024) is a queer romance unlike any I’ve read before, primarily because it was a polyamorous romance between a nonbinary single person with a queer couple–a queer trans man and a bisexual woman. I so enjoyed it!
The nonbinary single person–Charlie Dee–works for a nonprofit and is burned out both because of working too much, and because the queer collective they helped grow has disbanded for over a year, and they still feel the loss. When their boss sends them out of town on an assignment, they agree just because it will seem like a vacation. But there’s a snowstorm, and the AirBnb still seems to have occupants . . .The author did a good job of queering some classic romance tropes.
I loved how we got a sense of who Charlie was before they met Buffy and Hayden, their comfort in being assimilated into their family, with a super-energetic 5-year old and multiple animals, and Charlie’s confusion about both partners hitting on them. It was a “really cute” romance about the possibility of healthy polyamory and making queer families.
And I give it bonus points for at least one sexy fat belly! So I count it as fat-positive as well, with no implicit or explicit anti-fat bias.
