Movement for Every Body: An Inclusive Fitness Guide for Better Movement–Build mind-body awareness, overcome exercise barriers, and improve mobility by Marcia Dernie, DPT (publication date August 13, 2024) lives up to the promises of its grand title.
Dr. Marcia, who also has a website with lots of free content at https://www.doctormarcia.com/, has written a book with clear instructions for all kinds of modifications and ways to get some movement in no matter what kinds of physical limitations someone may have. One of my other side hustles (in addition to this book review blog) is teaching water fitness, and she echoes something I often say–that any movement is better than no movement.
It is an excellent handbook for those wanting to get back into exercise after a while or those trying to figure out how to modify exercises to accommodate what their body can do.
Dr. Marcia avoids the anti-fat bias that is so often prevalent in exercise books and included helpful photographs of the different modifications that she recommends. Her photos are inclusive of different body sizes, and so I consider the book fat-positive.
