Divine Ruin

Book cover for Divine Ruin by Margot Douaihy. The background is a deep leafy green, with a snake on the right side and grass at the bottom. In the center of the cover in a deep bluish-purple is a nun laying on the ground, with her hands folded on her chest. She has a lit cigarette in her mouth and an apple lies near her head.

Divine Ruin (publication day January 13, 2026) by Margot Douaihy is another thrilling installment in the adventures of Sister Holiday–former punk rocker, current nun, nonpracticing lesbian, amateur sleuth! I love this series! (#1 is Scorched Grace, #2 is Blessed Water.) This time Sister Holiday is dealing with the overdose of one of her favorite students, and she’s afraid that more will follow. So she goes undercover to try to assist the police in finding out where the drugs laced with fentanyl are coming from. But being undercover means she isn’t sober any more, as she has her own demons that she has wrestled, and she can’t blow her cover.

Something strange is going on with her brother Moose and her best friend Bernard, and she has her final vows to worry about, along with where is Prince Dempsey and that pit bull that seems to be the only thing he cares about?

I love Douaihy’s use of New Orleans as a character, and I love that Sister Holiday just keeps going, no matter what. If you haven’t read any of the series, do yourself a favor and read them all. Douaihy’s writing is wise, poignant, and funny, sometimes all at the same time. I highlighted so many passages that I want to remember.

It’s also weight-neutral, no negative mention of fatness or body size, really, at all.
